A Brief History

In colonial times, Likhubula House was owned by someone called Mr. Skinner and was run as a countryside hotel. Mr. Skinner sold it in the 70s to Blantyre Synod. Two ministers, the Very Rev. Silas Ncozana and a Canadian minister were sent here to run and manage Likhubula House as a youth centre. Between 2004 and 2010, Lokhubula House was renovated in its entirety using funds given by the Scottish Government. This year in July, the same partnership between Likhubula House and Scottish Malawi Foundation is being extended for a further 5 years in which Likhubula House will be added new accomodation chalets.

The Likhubula House chalets and dorms are set in beautuful grounds at the feet of Mulanje Mountain. It can accomodate around 60 people plus camping.

Accomodation:

  • 5 Chalets: Chalet 1 & 2 have two bedrooms, Chalet 3 has a double bedroom like a studio. Chalet 4 has one bedroom with twin beds. Chalet 5 has two bedrooms, one with twin beds and one with double bed. All chalets are equipped with kitchen, en-suite showerooms, a sitting room and a veranda. They also have solar heated water.
  • 7 Dormitories: with 3-4 beds and shared toilet and shower facilities.
  • Hostels: the hostel rooms are large each with 12 beds and share toilets and shower facilities.
  • Leaders' Rooms: There are 4 leaders rooms with shared toilets and bathrooms between two rooms.
  • Camping: There are camping facilities near the Likhubula Pools carpark with onsite toilet/ showers and kitchen facilities.

Food There is a canteen at Likhubula that serves cooked meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner). On request it can provide sandwiches for those wanting to spend the day climbing or exploring. Depending which type of accomodation you will go for, it is always a good idea to bring food and some of your favorite nibbles with you.

Mount Mulanje Porters Race at Likhubula This is an annual event that takes place in July. Every year there are hundreds of participants and they all say that it is probably the best race in the world. For the spectator, the race is wonderful to watch. The best spot is at Likhubula pools that are near the Likhubula House where you can see the racers coming in towards the finish of the race. Below are some pictures taken at the race this year in 2011. You can read some more about the race and its dramatism by clicking here.
